EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) shielding is a means of protecting electronic devices and components from electromagnetic interference (EMI) through blocking or reducing the strength of electromagnetic fields. It is also used to effectively cap radio frequency interference (RFI), which refers to the electromagnetic interference of the radio spectrum (RF).


EMI shielding, as well as RFI shielding, is important in preventing electromagnetic interference from causing malfunctions or failures in electronic equipment used by multiple fields of industry. The increasing number of electronic equipment, power lines, radio waves, and even natural occurrences like lightning are just a few of the many potential causes of such unwelcome interference.


One of the central means of achieving EMC shielding is metallic casing. The use of materials that conduct electricity, such as metals or carbon, enables creating a barrier that prevents electromagnetic waves from entering or leaving the protected device or space. The protective material can be applied as a coating or a layer on the surface of the equipment, or it can be formed into a physical enclosure, such as a metal box, case, or a cabinet, to completely envelop the device.


In addition to metallic casing and conductive coating, some other applications used to achieve EMC shielding include ferrite absorbers, conductive gaskets, and tapes. The type and strength of the electromagnetic fields that need to be blocked, the shielding material’s quality, and the design and manufacturing of the shielding structure all affect how well it blocks electromagnetic fields. For example, a thicker and higher-quality conductive sheet metal enclosure can provide better protection than a thinner, less-conductive metal enclosure.


In many industries, EMC shielding is a critical feature, including aerospace, automotive and transportation, telecommunications, medical devices, and military applications. It is also an essential part in the design and construction of electromagnetic sensitive facilities, such as research laboratories and data centres, where high levels of EMI could bring about significant damage to the electronic equipment.
